Your focus as a designer should always be on achieving an objective, where you have a message, audience, and context and do your best to accomplish the stated goals. You don't start out trying to make a portfolio, and it's unlikely if not impossible for you to be any good within only a few months and/or approaching it part-time (under 15 hours per week).Īgain, if just a hobby, do what you want, but then you wouldn't need a portfolio.Ĭould I make a poster/design for an existing company like Apple without their consent?Īnything you do just to practice/develop would be concept work, and doing something for Apple as just a practice would be fine, but I would avoid doing anything for a major company, it will fail. To have a good portfolio, that work would be the product of many lesser or failed projects that came before, about learning, improving, and then more application of that knowledge. If you want a reference point, someone in a 3-4 year program is spending about 1,000 hours per year, and would complete around 50-150 projects over that program, all to produce a portfolio of about 5-10 projects.

A portfolio should not even be on your mind until you have done enough work that you can pick out the best projects.

Your focus at this point should be just to learn, practice, develop. It's one thing if you just want to learn as a hobby, but in that case you wouldn't need a portfolio, so if the intent is a portfolio then that means you want to pursue it as a career or generate income. Your starting portfolio should come out of your practice. Mock-ups aren't really that difficult to make, but people overthink it and tend to rely on templates.Ģ) Do I just start creating posters/brochures etc for random things that I like? And what are the rules of this? They are likely templates people found, whether paid or free.

Are these royalty free stock images/clips? As I'm just starting out I don't have commissions or actual products so I'm confused as to how people are getting things. Where are people getting product images and clips from? I'm seeing a lot of video or photo examples that advertise food or books etc.
